If your kids love animals, getting out on the water and searching for wildlife is one Belize adventure you won’t want to miss.
During our family trip to Belize, we took a boat from Placencia and headed toward Monkey River, trading the Caribbean beach for winding waterways and jungle scenery.
We never knew exactly what we’d see along the way β and honestly, that’s what made it so much fun.
The goal was simple: explore, keep our eyes open, and see what wildlife we could find.
From monkeys calling through the trees to birds flying overhead and creatures hiding along the riverbanks, Monkey River gave us a completely different look at Belize.
And for a family that loves chasing wild adventures, it was right up our alley.
What Is Monkey River?
Monkey River is a small community and river located in southern Belize, not far from Placencia.
The area is surrounded by tropical forest, wetlands, and waterways, making it a great place to experience Belize’s wildlife.
Rather than spending the day hiking deep into the jungle, a Monkey River excursion typically involves traveling by boat and exploring the river and surrounding area with a local guide.
That makes it a fun option for families who want to experience Belize’s jungle without committing to a long, strenuous hike.
And the boat ride itself is part of the adventure.
Our Monkey River Adventure
Our adventure started with a boat ride away from Placencia. As we left the coastline behind, the scenery began to change. The bright Caribbean water gave way to mangroves, riverbanks, and dense greenery.
This was one of those experiences where you really have to slow down and look around. Wildlife doesn’t exactly schedule an appearance for your tour. You have to watch the trees. Listen for sounds in the jungle. Look along the riverbank. And sometimes, you get lucky.
Searching for Howler Monkeys
One of the biggest reasons people visit Monkey River is the chance to see howler monkeys. And when we say howler, we mean HOWLER.
Even before you see them, you may hear them. Their calls can travel through the jungle, creating that unmistakable feeling that you’re surrounded by wildlife.
We kept our eyes on the trees as we searched for them. For kids, this kind of wildlife spotting can be so much more exciting than simply visiting an animal attraction. You’re not being shown an animal that’s waiting behind glass. You’re searching for it. You’re watching. You’re wondering where the sound is coming from. And when you finally spot one, it feels like you’ve discovered something.
What Wildlife Can You See?
Of course, wildlife sightings are never guaranteed β that’s part of the adventure.
Depending on the season, weather, and luck, you may encounter different animals throughout the trip.
Some of the wildlife you may have a chance of seeing includes:
π Howler Monkeysπ¦ Iguanas

π¦ Iguanas

π Crocodiles
More Than Just a Wildlife Tour
One of our favorite things about Monkey River was that the experience wasn’t just about checking animals off a list.
It was about being surrounded by nature. The river. The jungle. The sounds. The boat ride. The anticipation of wondering what might appear next.
For kids especially, there’s something special about getting out of the car and into an environment where they have to use their eyes and ears to discover what’s around them.
It’s a real-life nature lesson β without feeling like one.
Is Monkey River worth the adventure?
Yes β especially for families who enjoy wildlife and outdoor adventures.
One of the advantages of a river excursion is that you can experience the jungle from a boat instead of spending hours hiking through difficult terrain.
That can make it more manageable for families traveling with younger children.
However, every tour is different, so check the operator’s age requirements, boat setup, trip length, and safety policies before booking.
If your kids get excited about animals, boats, and exploring somewhere new, Monkey River can be a great addition to a Belize itinerary.
What to Bring for a Monkey River Tour
βοΈ Sun Protection
You’ll likely spend a lot of time outdoors, so bring:
- Sunscreen
- Sunglasses
- A hat
- Lightweight clothing
π¦ Bug Spray
You’re heading toward a jungle environment, so insect repellent is definitely worth packing.
π§ Water
Belize can get hot and humid. Bring plenty of water and encourage the kids to drink throughout the adventure.
πΈ Camera or Phone
You’ll want something to capture the moments when wildlife appears. Just remember that animals don’t always cooperate with the perfect photo.
π Comfortable Shoes
Even though much of the experience takes place on a boat, you may have some walking depending on the tour. Wear something comfortable that can handle getting wet or muddy.
Visiting Monkey River from Placencia
One of the reasons Monkey River worked so well for our family vacation was that we were staying in Placencia.
Placencia makes a convenient base for exploring southern Belize, and boat excursions can take you away from the beach and into a completely different environment.
That combination is one of the things we loved about our Belize trip. You don’t have to choose between a beach vacation and an adventure vacation.
You can have both.
Spend one day relaxing by the Caribbean and another searching the jungle for monkeys. That’s our kind of family trip.
Would We Recommend Monkey River?
Absolutely.
If your family enjoys wildlife, nature, and getting out on the water, Monkey River is an experience worth adding to your Belize itinerary. What we loved most was the sense of discovery.
We weren’t completely sure what we’d see. We had to listen for the monkeys. Search the trees. Watch the riverbanks. And enjoy the journey in between. That’s what makes these adventures so memorable.
You don’t always remember every restaurant you ate at or every road you drove down. But you remember the moment your family spotted something wild in the trees. You remember the excitement.
The pointing. The “Did you see that?!” And those are the moments we’re always chasing.
That’s why Monkey River will always be one of our favorite Belize adventures.
