What happens when you take a family vacation in Belize and decide to trade the beach for an underground adventure?

You go cave tubing.

During our Belize adventure, we headed to Caves Branch, left the Caribbean coastline behind, and ventured into the Belize jungle for an experience unlike anything we’d done before.

We weren’t just sightseeing. We were floating through an actual cave system.

With our tubes and headlamps ready, we made our way into the caves and followed the underground river while surrounded by towering limestone formations and complete darkness.

It was one of those experiences that reminded us exactly why we love chasing wild adventures as a family.

From Placencia to Caves Branch

Our Caves Branch adventure was part of our larger Belize trip, where we stayed in Placencia.

Placencia gave us the perfect mix of Caribbean beach time and access to some incredible adventures throughout southern Belize.

After enjoying the coast, we were ready for something completely different.

So we headed inland.

The scenery changed as we moved away from the beach and toward Belize’s lush jungle.

And before long, we were getting ready to head underground.

What Is Caves Branch?

Caves Branch is part of Belize’s extensive cave and river systems, located in the country’s lush interior.

The area is known for its caves, underground waterways, and jungle adventures.

For visitors, one of the most popular ways to experience the caves is cave tubing.

Instead of hiking through an underground cave, you float through portions of the cave system on an inner tube, following the underground river with a guide.

It sounds relaxing.

But getting there is part of the adventure too.

🛟 Our Cave Tubing Adventure

Once we arrived, we got ready for our cave tubing adventure.

Then came the trek through the jungle toward the caves.

This is where the adventure really begins.

You’re surrounded by thick greenery, tropical sounds, and the feeling that you’re heading somewhere most people will never see.

And then you reach the cave entrance. That’s when things get really interesting. We grabbed our tubes and entered the water. From there, we floated into the cave system.

Into the Darkness

The moment you enter the cave, the experience changes completely.

Outside, Belize is bright, green, and tropical.

Inside? Dark. Quiet. And incredible.

Our headlamps helped illuminate the cave around us as we floated along the underground river.

We could see the limestone formations overhead and around us, but much of the cave remained hidden in the darkness.

And that’s part of what made it so exciting. You’re floating through a place that feels completely different from the world above.

Exploring Belize’s Underground World

One of the coolest parts of cave tubing is realizing that you’re not simply floating down a river. You’re traveling through a natural cave system that was formed over thousands — and in many cases millions — of years.

The limestone formations, narrow passages, water, and darkness create an experience that’s completely different from anything you’ll find on the beach. For kids, it’s also a great opportunity to see geology and nature in a way that doesn’t feel like a lesson.

They’re experiencing it. They’re asking questions. They’re looking around.

And they’re probably thinking, “How did we end up down here?”. That’s our favorite kind of learning.

We could spend one day near the Caribbean Sea in Placencia and the next be deep in the jungle exploring an underground cave.
