One of our favorite low-stress Southern California day trip ideas with kids is to skip the car and turn the train ride into part of the adventure.

Taking the metro train makes the day feel extra exciting for kids, and it’s a fun way to explore coastal towns, historic destinations, and even city escapes without worrying about parking or traffic.

Some of our favorite train-friendly stops include:

  • San Juan Capistrano
  • San Clemente
  • Oceanside
  • Old Town San Diego or Downtown
  • Santa Monica + Venice Beach

  • Take a relaxing hike through the surrounding hills

One of our favorite stops is Los Rios Rancho. This beautiful orchard offers apple picking, a bakery and café, scenic walking trails, and picnic areas with gorgeous mountain views.

If you’re looking for sunshine, art, and a little desert adventure, Palm Springs makes a fantastic day trip.
