We’ve explored several different sides of Belize, and each one gave us a completely different experience.

📍 Placencia, Belize

One of the places we experienced during our Belize adventure was Placencia, a laid-back beach town located on a beautiful peninsula along the Caribbean coast.

Placencia became our home base for several of our Belize adventures, giving us access to both the ocean and some incredible inland experiences.

Placencia itself is a great option for families who want a mix of:

Monkey River Adventure

One of our favorite Belize experiences was exploring Monkey River.

Instead of hiking deep into the jungle, we boarded a boat and traveled along the river while keeping our eyes open for wildlife.

And yes — we saw monkeys!

Monkey River is known for its wildlife, and depending on the tour and conditions, you may encounter:

Caves Branch Adventure

If your kids love adventure, Caves Branch should definitely be on your Belize list.

This area of Belize is home to incredible limestone cave systems, and exploring them gives families the chance to experience something completely different from the country’s beaches.

One of our Belize adventures took us into the Caves Branch River system, where we experienced cave tubing and jungle activities.

🌊 Cave Tubing

Imagine floating through a cave with a headlamp while surrounded by massive limestone formations.

That’s cave tubing in Belize.

You’ll float along an underground river and make your way through sections of the cave system while your guide explains the area’s geology and history.

It’s one of those experiences that feels like a real-life adventure movie.

🌿 Jungle Adventures

Caves Branch isn’t just about caves.

The surrounding jungle provides opportunities for additional adventures, including activities such as zip-lining depending on the tour you choose.

If your family enjoys getting outside and trying something new, this is an experience worth adding to your Belize itinerary.

Xunantunich Maya Ruins

One of the most memorable parts of our Belize adventure was visiting Xunantunich, an ancient Maya archaeological site tucked into the jungle near the Belize–Guatemala border.

If your kids enjoy history, climbing, exploring, or simply pretending they’re Indiana Jones for the day, Xunantunich is an adventure worth adding to your Belize itinerary.

The site is best known for El Castillo, an impressive ancient Maya structure that rises above the surrounding jungle. Standing at the top gives you incredible views of the landscape and a whole new appreciation for just how advanced the Maya civilization was.

For our family, this wasn’t just a history lesson. It was an opportunity to get outside, explore ancient structures, climb, and experience a part of Belize that felt completely different from the beaches and rivers.

What to Expect at Xunantunich

A visit to Xunantunich can involve quite a bit of walking and climbing, so comfortable shoes and plenty of water are important — especially when traveling with kids.

As you explore, you’ll find:

• 🪨 Stone structures and carvings
• 🌎 Views across the surrounding landscape

One of the most exciting parts of the experience is reaching the higher areas of the site and looking out over the jungle.

You’ll find plenty of fresh seafood, rice and beans, tropical fruit, grilled meats, tacos, and other familiar options that can work well for families.

If you’re staying in Placencia, you’ll also find plenty of restaurants within the village and along the peninsula.

One of our favorite parts of traveling as a family is finding places where everyone can enjoy something — whether that’s a full local meal or simply grabbing something sweet after an adventure.

Belize can be hot and humid, especially when you’re exploring outdoors.

Lightweight clothing, comfortable shoes, hats, and plenty of water are essential.

For reef activities, check your tour operator’s recommendations regarding reef-safe sunscreen.
