If there’s one place in Costa Rica that truly feels like stepping into a real-life nature documentary, it’s the Puntarenas Province.
This region is where lush rainforests meet the Pacific Ocean, where monkeys swing through the trees, and where every day feels like a new adventure waiting to happen. It’s wild, vibrant, and full of experiences that go far beyond a typical beach vacation.
During our time here, we explored everything from bustling cities to peaceful coastal towns—visiting San José, chasing waterfalls near La Fortuna, spotting wildlife in Quepos and Manuel Antonio National Park, and even rafting down the incredible Pacuare River.
Even though Aiden wasn’t part of this trip yet, this is one of those destinations we immediately knew we’d return to with kids. It’s adventurous, educational, and unforgettable in all the right ways.
Best Things to Do in the Puntarenas Region
Explore San José
Most trips to Costa Rica begin in San José, and while many travelers pass through quickly, it’s worth spending at least a day exploring.
This city gives you a great introduction to Costa Rican culture before heading into nature.

Best suited for older kids and teens, but it’s an incredible bonding experience for adventurous families.

Costa Rica is full of fresh, simple, and flavorful meals that even picky eaters can enjoy.

During our visit, we stayed at El Paseo del Mar, and it was a perfect home base for exploring the coast.
