Costa Rica Adventures

Two Ways to Get There (From California)

If you are based from California, here are the two practical travel options to reach Costa Rica:

1. Fly Direct / With One Stop

  • There are flights from California (for example from Los Angeles) into either Juan Santamaría International Airport (SJO) near San José, or Daniel Oduber Quirós International Airport (LIR) in Guanacaste.

  • From California, flights can take around ~8–11 hours (depending on stopovers) and you’ll arrive ready to pick up the trip. For example, one analysis found that the average non-stop flight from California to Costa Rica takes about 11h 31m and direct routes are available from Los Angeles.

  • This is the fastest & simplest option.

2. Fly + Drive / Explore By Car

  • If you fly into LIR (Guanacaste) you get closer to the coast and your beach resort region more quickly. As noted: “It is only 2 hours from the Guanacaste Airport in Liberia (LIR) …”

  • Once you arrive, renting a car is strongly recommended if you want flexibility, explore multiple towns, and keep costs down (versus constant shuttles/private transfers).
    • The roads in Costa Rica are decent for many regions, though some parts may be rougher, so a comfortable rental vehicle (perhaps with some ground clearance) is wise.
    • Having your own car gives you freedom to visit beach towns, national parks and side trips at your own pace.
