San Diego Zoo Safari Park (Wild Animal Park) with Kids

Experience One of Southern California’s Best Wildlife Adventures
If your family loves wildlife, outdoor adventures, and unforgettable experiences, the San Diego Zoo Safari Park should be at the top of your Southern California bucket list.
Located in Escondido, about 35 miles north of downtown San Diego, the Safari Park offers a completely different experience than the San Diego Zoo. Instead of walking through traditional animal exhibits, you’ll explore expansive habitats where giraffes, rhinos, antelope, and other wildlife roam in large open spaces designed to resemble their natural environments.
It’s part zoo, part safari, and part conservation center—all wrapped into one incredible family adventure.
Whether you’re visiting for a few hours or spending an entire day exploring, there’s something exciting around every corner.
What Makes the Safari Park Different?

Many people assume the San Diego Zoo and Safari Park are the same attraction—but they’re actually very different experiences.
The Safari Park focuses on large open habitats that allow animals to roam together much like they would in the wild. The park is also much larger, making it feel more like a safari than a traditional zoo.
Families can enjoy:
- Beautiful walking trails
- Expansive wildlife habitats
- Educational presentations
- Animal encounters
- Scenic overlooks
- Guided safari experiences
- Seasonal events
- Family-friendly attractions
It’s one of those places where you’ll constantly stop to admire the scenery—not just the animals.
Best Things to Do at the Safari Park
🎈 Balloon Safari
One of the park’s most recognizable attractions is the Balloon Safari, a tethered helium balloon that slowly rises hundreds of feet above the park.
From the top you’ll enjoy incredible panoramic views of:
- The Safari Park’s sprawling habitats
- Wildlife roaming below
- North San Diego County
- Rolling hills and surrounding landscapes
It gives you a completely different appreciation for just how massive the park really is.

Why We Loved It
Seeing the Safari Park from above was one of our favorite moments. Watching the animal habitats stretch across the landscape made it feel even more like an authentic safari destination.
Family Tip: The Balloon Safari operates weather permitting, so if the wind is calm, consider riding earlier in your visit rather than waiting until the end of the day.
